Summer vs Winter?

In Alaska, two seasons that stand in stark contrast to each other have the power to take your breath away. From the lush greens of our midnight-sun filled summer days to the brilliant night sky full of stars and dancing aurora of winter, there is one constant. Denali. This mountain (also known as Mt. McKinley), and all it's neighboring peaks of the Alaska Range dominate the skyline to the north of Talkeetna and continue to stun all who gaze upon it with its shear beauty.

It's true that many of our visitors prefer the warmer summer months and that we offer more flights during those long days but here at K2 Aviation, we don't hibernate. While our winter flights don't offer that rapid change from summer to winter that you can experience in those first fifteen minutes or so of a flight from Talkeetna toward the mountains in June or July, they do give you a sight you can only see this time of year. Soaring over miles of frozen rivers and rugged terrain blanketed in feet of pure white snow, it will boggle your mind at how expansive, pristine, and undisturbed this corner of the world is.

Sure, it's always winter in the Alaska Range and luckily we can show you that year round, but don't dismiss the idea of coming up for a visit in the winter months. There are still plenty of things to do and memories to make. And for those of us who don't head south for the winter, we'd love to show you why this is our favorite time of year. Need some ideas? I had a chance to get out of the office last week and do a little ice fishing with K2 Pilot, Jeff. It was an absolutely perfect day. And it was so nice to spend some time with Jeff outside of work. We dropped in on a couple different lakes and only saw one other person all day. He was a grizzled old loner who had camped overnight on the lake with his dog. Once he realized we weren’t with the DNR, he was glad to have someone to talk with about the fishing.

I think when we put our first herring down the hole, it must have landed right on the head of a nice little 5 # pike because that flag went up even before we had our second line down. And that was how the day went. We only moved to a different lake in search of some bigger fish.

The fishing was a little slower at our 2nd stop, but the scenery was unbeatable. There was a bald eagle watching over us from his nest. And a curious river otter would pop up onto the ice from an open water creek nearby.

Jeff and I had a lot of time that day to sit and talk to one another, but during conversation our eyes rarely met. We were to busy scanning our array of tip-ups waiting for a flag to fly. When they did, the race was on!

Next winter I think I’ll charter an otter out there to one of those secret lakes and have a private fishing contest with 9 of my buddies.

Moose Visit K2

This morning as I was busily processing summer reservations, I glanced out the window and a moose looked back at me. He was calmly strolling down the Talkeetna State Airport taxiway, just checking out his flight options, apparently. I got the impression he was looking for a flight in first class with plenty of leg room and overhead storage space. He turned in to the K2 employee parking lot and browsed some willows by our plow truck before heading across the street to thicker forests. As it's pretty busy with everyone calling for our super "20% off 2011 summer bookings made by January 31st" deal, I could only dash out and grab a couple of hasty photos as he was on his way into the trees. I'll post more photos if he wanders back...

Field Trip to K2 Aviation!

Susitna Valley Jr./Sr. High School in Talkeenta is offering pilot-training ground school as an elective course for students this year. The pilot-training ground school class went on a field trip to the Talkeetna State Airport to gain some real world experiences that showed them a variety of career opportunities that will be available in the future.

The class visited K2 Aviation and learned about the career of a dispatcher, also known as a flight follower. K2 Aviation’s dispatchers are top-notch; they are constantly scheduling nine different aircrafts on three different flight types throughout the Alaska Range. The Susitna Valley High School students had a great time visiting K2 Aviation and learned a lot about this often-overlooked position of a dispatcher.

100 Hour Inspection

K2 Aviation takes its responsibilities for safety and aircraft maintenance extremely seriously. In addition to federally mandated annual maintenance inspections for all nine aircrafts in our fleet, our highly-trained maintenance staff also performs inspections after every 100 hours of flight time.

The 100 hour inspection requires the mechanics to examine every operating system of the aircraft to ensure that it meets or exceeds the aircraft manufacturer’s specifications for safe and comfortable flight.

Here is the K2 Aviation maintenance staff performing a 100 hour inspection on our Piper Cherokee, and of course our Cherokee made it through the inspection with a perfect report!

The Long Journey of a de Havilland Beaver

K2 Aviation operates several different aircrafts, one of the being the de Havilland Beaver. The K2 Aviation Beavers were manufactured in the 1950s by the Canadian company de Havilland. It was the first airplane ever built specifically for bush flying, which means it is great for our purposes of flying to the glacier and to remote landing strips.

Its large winged design gives it excellent “short take-off and landing” capabilities, and also gives it a unique appearance. The nose of the plane is a massive 9-cylinder radial engine, whose design dates back to World War II; the flat nose even resembles a pug. The plane is very comfortable to fly in and has windows that give every passenger a remarkable view. Our de Havilland Beavers even served in the U.S. Army when they first left the factory. It’s hard to believe that the Army green airplane seen in front of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1959 is the same one K2 Aviation is flying today!

Glacier Proposal

It was the summer of 2009, and Shaylee Watkins was heading to Anchorage, Alaska for her summer job working for Princess Tours. Unknown to her, it was there she would meet her future husband, Brian Perry.

When Shaylee and Brian first met, the two connected immediately when they discovered they were both from the same state of Utah. What was more surprising to the two was that they have been growing up side by side in cities that were 10 minutes apart, never meeting one another until they arrived in Alaska, over 3,000 miles away from home.

“We never actually dated the five months we were here last summer, but remained best friends the whole time,” said Shaylee. The two didn’t start dating until they returned to Utah in the fall where they shared their first kiss and have been dating ever since.

This summer Shaylee returned to work for Princess Tours while Brian stayed in Utah in his new career as a production engineer. Brian was able to take some vacation time and flew to Alaska to visit her. Being the romantic he is, Shaylee had a feeling that during Brian’s visit, he might propose to her since it was here in Alaska when they first formally met.

Brian did in fact propose during his trip, although, Shaylee never expected it to occur where it did.

On the afternoon of June 7^th, Shaylee and Brian took a flightseeing tour with K2 Aviation. Having enjoyed their K2 Aviation flightseeing tour last year for work with Princess Tours, the two decided to fly again since the last flight was incredibly breathtaking.

“I truly feel so blessed to have had such an amazing experience. It enhanced everything so much to be up in the air staring at huge mountains right next to me and crystal blue glacier pools below. It's so beautiful up there; it takes you away from everything else and you just focus on the majesty of it all,” Shaylee said.

K2 Aviation’s pilot Jeff Babcock landed the de Havilland Otter on Ruth Glacier. Amazed by Alaska’s spectacular scenery, Shaylee ran excitedly around Ruth Glacier to capture its surrounding beauty of the granite peaks. Meanwhile, Brian was talking to the pilot and then called Shaylee over to the K2 Aviation plane to have their picture taken.

Once Jeff announced that he was recording, Brian, a little nervous, got down on one knee into the soft white snow of Ruth Glacier. The moment Shaylee had been anticipating for the last few days had arrived. Surrounded by the snow covered towering mountains of the Alaska Range, Brian Perry asked Miss Shaylee Watkins to marry him, and she of course, said YES!

“I'm so glad that Brian and I get to look back at it years from now; it will most definitely be a big highlight of all the things we've done together. I'll definitely always remember K2 Aviation, Suzanne Rust, and of course Pilot Jeff. Without them, it would have never happened the way it did!”

There’s a New Addition to the K2 Aviation Family!

Please welcome “Sportcraft Intrepid” Table Tennis Table, aka “Ping Pong Table” to the K2 Aviation family! Ping Pong Table was born early July of 2010 in the Geeting Hangar in the Talkeetna Airport, weighing a hefty 136.4 lbs. at delivery.

Stretching 5ft x 9ft, Ping Pong Table has quickly become part of the family. Pilots Chuck Luper (on the left) and Chris Hopman (on the right) have already included our new family member in a friendly game of table tennis.

Climbers, please enjoy an exciting game of table tennis in the Geeting Hangar while you are waiting to depart for your climb!

Have You Ever Seen A Flying Moose?

The Talkeetna Artists Guild, the Talkeetna Historical Society, and the Talkeetna Chamber of Commerce organize and host the “Moose on Parade” every year. Although the Moose Dropping Festival did not take place this year, “Moose on Parade” did. K2 Aviation is proud to keep up the tradition of featuring a K2 Aviation float in Talkeetna’s summer parade down Main Street.

People and organizations from all over town decorate moose that will be displayed around town and auctioned off to raise money for the Talkeetna Historical, the Talkeetna Artists Guild, and the Talkeetna Chamber of Commerce. “Moose on Parade” is modeled after the “Wild Salmon on Parade” in Anchorage and the “Cows on Parade” in Chicago. Many parade-goers told us that our “flying moose” (in the back of the truck) was the best of all the moose they’d seen that day!

K2 Aviation Receives Gold Award in Best Flightseeing Tour!

On June 25^th, K2 Aviation was the recipient of the Gold Award in the category of Best Flightseeing Tour in the 2010 Best of Alaska Awards. The Best of Alaska Awards are organized every year by the Anchorage Daily News and are nominated by local Alaskans.

This shows that not only is K2 Aviation a favorite with visitors from out-of-state, local Alaskans also recognize the superior product we provide! This is not the first time K2 Aviation has been recognized. In 2008, K2 Aviation won the Platinum Best of Alaska Award, and in 2009, we won the Gold Best of Alaska Award.

Is It Snowing in July?

One of the most frequently asked questions from our K2 Aviation customers is,

“What kind of tree is in the front yard of your office?”

This massive, beautiful tree is known as the Populus Trichocarpa, commonly known as the Black Cottonwood. This tree is the largest hardwood tree in western North America and can grown anywhere from 60-120 feet high. If you visit the K2 Aviation office during the summer, you often find white fluffy clusters scattered around the lawn. Our Black Cottonwood tree is constantly shedding seeds in the form of fluffy catkins, which appear like unharvested cotton.

When it’s flying through the air, the cottony clusters of seeds can make Talkeetna appear like it’s facing a snowstorm in July! Our K2 Aviation pilots have even reported seeing it flying through the air at altitudes as high as 1,000 feet!

Customers at K2 Aviation have been raving about our floral arrangements around our office in Talkeetna, Alaska. All of our vibrant colored petunia hanging flower baskets and sky blue lobelia and dahlia arrangements come from Jacobson’s Greenhouse and Nursery in Wasilla, Alaska. Jacobson’s Greenhouse has been opened since 1979, and 17 of those years, K2 Aviation has ordered beautiful flowers from them. We enjoy admiring these arrangements as much as our K2 Aviation customers do!

K2 Aviation Took Part in Making History!

On June 11^th, K2 Aviation took part in making history! At this moment, 15-year-old Romanian Crina Coco Popescu holds the record for being the youngest European climber to successfully climb Mt. McKinely (Denali), the largest peak in North America.

Climbing Mt. McKinley is part the Seven Summit Challenge where mountaineers and climbers scale the highest peaks in each of the seven continents. Climbing Mt. McKinley is the fifth peak in her Seven Summit Challenge; Miss Popescu has already completed Aconcagua, Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Elbrus, and Carstensz Pyramid.

Our K2 Aviation pilot, Jeff Babcock, flew Miss Popescu to the base of Mt. McKinley where she began to ascent its peak. She later describes her K2 Aviation flight to the base camp on her website.

“I saw amazing mountains, high and sharp increases…Everything green turned into white. Snow was flowing everywhere in the avalanches; crevasses opened and swallows everything above it,” she writes.

Mt. McKinley, with a summit elevation of 6,194 m above sea level, was completed by Miss Popescu in 10 days, even with hostile weather conditions at the beginning of the expedition. She scaled the mountain far much quicker than the 21 days recommended by the Denali National Park staff and medical advisors in their mountaineering booklet.

Miss Popescu thought the expedition on Mt. McKinley was new and different from what she has done before.

“It was great! I love how wild this place is!” she said. Luckily for Miss Popescu, the weather cleared on June 20^th, their summit day.

“No clouds, no wind! I felt very good. I was so happy that we could go to the summit!” During her climb up Mt. McKinley, the summit seemed very long to her, but stated how beautiful Mt. McKinley was.

Climbing is Miss Popescu’s passion; she has been climbing since she was 6-years-old. She hopes to be the youngest female to complete the Seven Summit Challenge. To read more about her expedition summiting Mt. McKinley, visit her website .

Regular viewers of our webcam may notice that on particularly sunny days when the mountain is clear of clouds and at its most spectacular - it looks as if there has been an explosion. Like this:

Have no fear, our glorious mountain range has not imploded, it has something to do with a setting on the webcamera. Our heroes on the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge Maintenance staff will be climbing up to do some painting on the lodge soon and will also help to adjust the webcamera. During this time the view may be interrupted while the camera is taped off for the painting. Please be patient, as we'll get that gorgeous view coming back through the interwebs to you soon!

Seasonal Migration

The arctic terns aren't the only creatures that travel great distances to experience the beauty of summer in Alaska, some of our pilots do too! Our pilots are all experienced Alaskan flyers, but some now prefer to spend their winters in the warmer climates just like our feathered friends. This Cessna 140 was flown up from Florida by our pilot, Ed. In past years Ed would drive up, but he decided to travel a little differently this year.

What a beautiful day! As if Denali showing herself wasn't enough, the web camera that allows us to share this lovely view with the rest of the world was cleaned today. Yipee!! Some of our loyal webcam followers may have noticed some smudges on the image this winter, and though it would seem a simple enough fix to just go up to the camera with some glass cleaner - it's not that easy. Our webcam is mounted on the roof of the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, which is a multi-story building and not one you can just get to with a step stool or ladder. So a heartfelt thanks goes to the maintenance staff of the Lodge for "clarifying" our view of the Alaska Range!

After a roughing it on the Iditarod trail behind his dogs, Sam Deltour got to tour Denali in the comfort of K2 Aviation's Piper Cherokee on Friday. The young Belgian won the title of "Most Improved Musher" in the great race that streches from Willow to Nome. On his last full day in Alaska he treated his family to a spectacular Denali Grand Tour, flying all the way around Mt. McKinley on a made-to-order cloudless day. Even after the wilderness beauty of the trail, he expressed true amazment at the grandure of Denali. Happy Trails, Sam!

Italian Soloist Kicks Off 2010 Denali Season!

Today, K2 pilot Dan "the Man" cut fresh tracks on the untouched Kahiltna Glacier surface in a Cessna 185 wheel-ski plane. His passenger was Emmanuele Vellati, the first Denali mountaineer of the 2010 climbing season. Vellati will be spending the next month alone with 20,320 ft. of rock, ice, and snow. Solo climbing is rogue even during the summer months when the mountain is populated with about 1,100 to 1,200 climbers over a 4 month period. In the winter, with no National Park Service rangers, no base camp, and no teammates this 25 year old Italian will rely entirely on his own resources. I've never been a morning person. I may have to change my mind. Winter sunrises at the K2 Aviation airport in Talkeetna are intense, and yesterday's just took my breath away. Some people think winter tourism is Alaska is a crazy idea. This "Winter Wonderland Weekend" was full of visitors from Vermont to Brazil who say otherwise. Pristine natural beauty, scenic flights that redefine the meaning of awesome, and the most welcoming hometown folks in the world make Talkeetna, Alaska a little slice of, well, heaven.

K2 Aviation has the most devoted baseball cap customers in the world! This month I’ve had multiple phone/email conversations with K2 hat owners that have literally loved their hats to death. I got an email from Brent, whose wife won’t allow him out of the house in his K2 hat anymore. He said it’s so dirty, even the dishwasher won’t get it clean. He’s been wearing it since his 50th birthday, 8 years ago, after his 4th K2 flight up to Mt. McKinley. I also have been exchanging emails with John, who has given me a whole new appreciation for the art of haberdashery. Thanks to John I know that we need to carry structured five panel hats with a buckram flap! Who knew??? I had to send John some bonus decals and K2 temporary tattoos for his research. John is actually creating his own custom K2 hat with our iron-on patches so that he can represent with style on his trip to Mexico next week. Now, our hat selection is pretty extensive; we must have 20 different styles, and an article of clothing this personal obviously takes some thought. So what I do for these discriminating customers is send a digital photo of our entire hat selection and let them choose their look. I really think we should start a “K2 Hats Off!” competition for the best hat story of the year. Even while I’m writing this, I had to stop and sell another hat!

Snow!!

What a beautiful day! Yesterday it was snowing heavily. Today the skies are blue and our normally vibrant red planes are wearing their "winter" coats. Alaska is stunning, whether it's dressed in the glorious greens of summer or blanketed in the glistening white of winter. What is really amazing is when you can combine the two sights in a single day. In the summer months, taking a flight with K2 Aviation means you get to enjoy both! Taking off from the town of Talkeetna you soar over all the lush vegetation of the Northern Susitna Valley and then you find yourself gazing in awe at the permanently frozen glaciers and peaks of the Alaska Range. Such a stark contrast, it really takes your breath away.

Talkeetna Sunrise

The first snow lays sparkling and undisturbed on the K2 Aviation runway this morning. Our days are already so much shorter; we live in a golden twilight from dawn to dusk. Today dawn broke between the wingtips of our Cessna 185 and the DeHavilland Beaver, casting long blue shadows at 9:48 AM. The quality of light is an amazing thing. Here on the silent early morning runway it evokes an otherworldly serenity. Our webcam catches the nuances of light on Mt. McKinley as well. The low angle of the sun at this time of year highlights the dramatic contrasts of rosy light and deep shadow over Denali’s ridge tops and ravines. Though our visitors are fewer in the winter months, they are treated to a majestic display unique to this time of year.
